Giving original art as a gift

A painting makes a lasting gift when it is chosen for the recipient's home and arrives with its papers. Choose by their rooms and colours, not your own taste, and ask about delivery and exchange in writing before you buy.

Which occasions suit a painting as a gift?

Most occasions do, if the work suits the room it will live in. The useful question is what the recipient will see every day, and whether it will still please them in ten years, long after the occasion has passed.

Corporate gifts follow the same logic. For a client or a retiring director, one considered work with proper papers says more than a hamper. Keep the subject neutral and say in writing whose name the invoice and certificate should carry.

  • Weddings: a calm, warm work for the couple's first shared home.
  • Housewarmings: the easiest case, because the wall is waiting.
  • Diwali and festivals: warm colour, but ask early, as dates are busy.
  • Milestone birthdays: a work linked to something they love.
  • Retirements: a work for the study or the room they will now use more.

How do I choose when I do not know their taste?

Look at what is already in their home, what they wear and what they hang. Choose a quiet subject over a divisive one, and avoid religious or political subjects unless you know them well.

A medium size fits most walls. A work on paper is easier to place than a very large canvas. If you can, ask someone close to them for a photograph of the room, and write to us with it. The preview at /on-your-wall/ can help you judge scale.

What papers should travel with the gift?

Every work comes with an invoice, a certificate of authenticity, a condition report and a recorded ownership history. The recipient will want all four, for insurance, for care and for any later sale.

The invoice shows the price. If you would rather the recipient did not see it, ask the house in writing how the papers can be handled, and settle that before dispatch.

How do delivery and a private handover work?

Tell the house the recipient's address, the date you want the work to arrive and whether it is a surprise. Ask in writing how it will be packed, who will receive it and what the arrangement is.

If you want to present the work yourself, ask in writing whether a private handover can be arranged and how. When it arrives, open it with the recipient and check it against the condition report. Advice on hanging and framing is at /care/.

Can the recipient exchange the work?

The terms for exchange are not set out here, so ask the house in writing before you buy and keep the reply. Ask whether exchange is possible, within what period, who bears the transport cost, and whether it still applies once the work is framed or hung.

Then tell the recipient the answer kindly. A gift that cannot be placed becomes a burden, and knowing the choice is theirs makes the gift easier to accept.

If the recipient is likely to move home soon, mention that when you ask, since it affects how they will want the work packed and carried later.

What about tax on a gift of art?

Tax on gifts should be confirmed with your tax adviser or chartered accountant before you buy. This is more important for a gift from a company, where the paperwork matters. Printed prices, with no buyer's premium and no deposit, let your adviser see the full figure at the start. A short written note to your adviser, with the invoice once you have it, is usually all that is needed to start that conversation.
