Sanjeev Sonpimpare was born in Mumbai in 1969 and took his Bachelor's degree in painting at the Sir J.J. School of Art in 1993, followed by a UNESCO-Aschberg residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin in 2000.

He began as an abstractionist and turned to a representational language about life in India's large cities, reworking street scenes, middle-class figures, magazine covers and advertising images, often with humour. He writes on art, has shown in Mumbai and Dublin, and curated the group exhibition Written on Water at Gallery Beyond in Mumbai.
