A woman in a white sari, wet to the knees, stands in the river at the foot of a stepped ghat. One hand holds a brass vessel and the other reaches down to set a lamp on the water, where a dish of flowers and small flames floats at her feet. Behind her the temples, steps, awnings and boats of the riverbank rise in warm browns and gold, painted in fine, scratched detail, while she is modelled in soft light with the white cloth clinging to her. The mood is dusk or dawn, quiet and devout. A small signature sits at the lower right and has not yet been read. The medium and the maker have not yet been established.
