Blue Nude, seated with crossed legs
Framed print after the 1952 paper cut-out
A figure crouches with crossed legs, head bowed and turned in, folded into a compact and almost architectural shape. It is the quietest of the four, and the one that carries the printed H. Matisse 52 most clearly at the lower edge. It is one of four framed prints after Matisse's Blue Nudes of 1952, the paper cut-outs he made late in his life from sheets painted with gouache. The printed signature reads H. Matisse 52. This is a print, not the cut-out itself; the edition, its publisher and its authorisation have not yet been established, and the plate is taken from a photograph of the work on the wall.
